Back in the March newsletter I wrote about the value of a small church and titled it, “Small Church Big Impact”. How surprised I was when at District Assembly in April we were given a book called Small Church Big Impact. I guess my idea must be better than I thought.
In the book by Debra White Smith, she gives the Top 10 Advantages of Small Churches. They are:
10. You can’t get lost in a small church.
9. The bathrooms are easy to find.
8. When your toddler runs to the platform during the sermon, it is viewed as holy entertainment.
7. Christmas programs are full of bloopers, and that is what makes them so great.
6. If you have to stop and restart your special song, nobody cares.
5. It’s OK to interrupt the song service with a testimony, and the more the better.
4. Your kids have multiple sets of parents and grandparents.
3. Your prayer requests are in the church bulletin.
2. If you miss church without reporting in, there is a churchwide alert to find you.
1. You have a close relationship with your pastor.
I must admit that as I read this list one of the first thoughts that I had was of a young man who decided to take his shirt off recently on the platform during the service because he was hot. The great thing was no one minded. It just became a little “holy entertainment.” This small church is the best church for that young man.
As you read the list, I am sure you had some other memories pop into your head. They may have brought out a laugh as you remembered something that happened, or they may have brought out a thank you Jesus as you realized just how much this church has blessed you.
So, maybe we are not one of the big churches in The Woodlands, but for each of us, the impact has been just what we needed. Better yet, there is more to come. Small church big impact.
